What Makes a Good Security Guard Company

Houston has hundreds of security companies. Most are terrible. Here's what separates the professionals from the guys who just bought a uniform on Amazon:

  • Texas DPS license verification. Every legitimate company has a company license number you can verify on the DPS website. Every officer carries an individual pocket card. If they can't show credentials, walk away.
  • Insurance documentation. General liability ($1M minimum), workers' comp and professional liability. Ask for certificates of insurance naming your property as additional insured. No insurance = you're personally liable if something goes wrong.
  • Supervisor oversight. Guards left unsupervised for 8–12 hour shifts will underperform. Good companies have field supervisors doing random checks, GPS tracking on mobile units and digital reporting systems.
  • Backup coverage. Guards call in sick. Cars break down. What's the company's policy for filling a vacant post? A good company guarantees coverage within 2 hours. A bad one leaves your property unguarded until the next shift.

Houston Guard Licensing Requirements

Texas requires all security guards to be licensed through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). There are three levels:

  • Level II (Non-Commissioned): Unarmed guards. 6-hour training course covering legal authority, emergency procedures and use of force. Background check and fingerprinting required.
  • Level III (Commissioned): Armed guards. 40-hour training course plus range qualification. Annual firearms proficiency testing. Must carry pocket card at all times on duty.
  • Level IV (Personal Protection): Executive protection officers. Additional 15-hour course on close protection tactics, threat assessment and evasive driving.

Every guard we deploy carries a valid DPS pocket card matching their assignment level. You can verify any guard's credentials directly on the Texas DPS Private Security Bureau website. If a security company can't produce license documentation on request, walk away and don't hire them.

Industries We Serve

Different industries have different security requirements and risk profiles. We staff and train accordingly for each assignment type:

  • Construction sites — after-hours armed patrols, tool and material theft prevention
  • Warehouses — loading dock access, cargo screening, employee monitoring
  • Oil & gas — TWIC-card holders, petrochemical facility access control
  • Retail — loss prevention, parking lot safety, shoplifting deterrence
  • HOA/Residential — gate access, community patrols, visitor screening
