Self-Monitored vs. Central Station

Self-monitored systems send alerts to your phone. You decide whether to call police. Cost: $0–15/month for app fees.

Central station monitoring means a live operator at a monitoring center receives the alarm signal, verifies it and dispatches police or fire. Response time: 30–90 seconds from alarm trigger to dispatch call. Cost: $20–60/month.

For businesses, central station monitoring is almost always worth it. The $40/month cost is irrelevant compared to one break-in. For homes, it depends on your neighborhood and risk tolerance. High-crime areas in Houston — Greenspoint, Sunnyside, parts of Third Ward — benefit significantly from monitored systems.

Wireless vs Hardwired Alarm Systems

Wireless systems use battery-powered sensors that communicate via radio frequency. Installation is faster and less invasive — no drilling through walls to run wire. Best for rental properties and retrofits. Downside: batteries need replacing every 3-5 years and signal interference can cause false alarms in some buildings.

Hardwired systems use physical wiring between every sensor and the control panel. More reliable, no battery concerns, no signal interference. Best for new construction and permanent installations. Downside: installation costs 20-30% more due to wiring labor. For most Houston homes, wireless is the right choice. For commercial properties running 24/7, hardwired is worth the extra install cost.

Houston-Specific Alarm Considerations

Houston's climate and geography create unique alarm challenges. Power outages during hurricanes and thunderstorms are common — every system we install includes a backup battery that keeps the alarm running for 24-48 hours without grid power. Cellular communication backup is standard in case landlines or internet go down during storms.

False alarms are a real issue in Houston. HPD charges $200+ for repeated false alarm dispatches. Motion sensors set too sensitive pick up ceiling fans, pets and heat convection. We calibrate every sensor during installation and test each zone before leaving. Pet-immune motion sensors (up to 80 lbs) are standard on residential installs.

Houston's high humidity also affects sensor lifespan significantly over time. Moisture can corrode battery contacts and sensor connections in outdoor-rated units. We use conformal-coated electronics on all exterior sensors and recommend annual professional inspections to catch corrosion before it causes false alarms or missed alerts.

Combine Alarms with Cameras and Guards

An alarm system works best as part of a layered security approach. Alarms detect intrusions. Cameras record evidence and enable remote verification. Guards respond physically. Most commercial clients use all three — the alarm triggers the camera, the monitoring center verifies the threat on camera and dispatches the nearest patrol officer.
