IP Cameras vs. Analog
We install IP (Internet Protocol) cameras exclusively. Analog is dead technology for new installs. Here's why IP wins:
- → Resolution: IP cameras shoot 2MP–8MP (1080p–4K). Analog maxes at 720p. You can actually identify faces on IP footage.
- → Remote access: View live and recorded footage from your phone anywhere in the world. Analog requires on-site monitor access.
- → Smart detection: AI-powered person, vehicle and object detection. Get alerts only when something that matters happens — not every time a tree branch moves.
- → POE power: One ethernet cable carries video and power. Cleaner install, fewer failure points.
Camera Placement Strategy
Where you put cameras matters more than how many you buy. A 4-camera system with correct placement outperforms a 12-camera system with bad angles every time. Here's the priority order for most Houston properties:
- 1. Front door. 34% of burglars enter through the front door. A visible camera here doubles as a deterrent. Mount at 8-9 feet to prevent tampering.
- 2. Back door/patio. Second most common entry point. Cover the entire back approach, not just the door itself.
- 3. Driveway/garage. Vehicle theft and catalytic converter theft are rampant in Houston. A camera with license plate capture adds another layer.
- 4. Side gates. The forgotten entry point. Most Houston homes have side yard gates that are never locked and never monitored. Easy access to backyards.
For commercial properties, prioritize loading docks, cash register areas, employee entrances and parking lots. Point of sale cameras should capture faces clearly — mount at face height (5-6 feet) near the register, not on the ceiling where you only see the top of someone's head.
Houston Weather and Camera Durability
Houston's climate is brutal on outdoor electronics. 95°F+ heat, 90% humidity, hurricane-force winds and driving rain. Every outdoor camera we install is rated IP66 or IP67 for weather resistance. Operating temperature range: -22°F to 140°F. The housings are sealed against moisture — Houston's humidity will destroy non-rated cameras within 6-12 months. We also use stainless steel mounting hardware instead of standard zinc-plated screws that rust in Gulf Coast air within weeks.
Video Storage and Retention
Every system includes a local NVR with 30 days of continuous recording. Need longer retention? We add larger hard drives or set up cloud backup. For businesses with compliance requirements (banks, healthcare, government contractors), we configure 90-day or 1-year retention with redundant storage so footage is never lost.
Cameras + Alarms + Guards
Cameras record. Alarms detect. Guards respond. The most effective security setup layers all three. Your alarm triggers, the monitoring center verifies on camera and dispatches a patrol officer or police. Each layer compensates for the others' weaknesses.
